Behind the Scenes: Building the ENHL from Scratch

The Egyptian National Hockey League (ENHL) is making history by building Egypt’s first ice hockey movement from the ground up. With one official team — the Cairo Nomads — and open practices held twice a week at Sun City Mall, the league is growing fast despite limited resources. This article takes you behind the scenes of how the ENHL is defying the odds, developing a new sports culture in Egypt, and how you can be part of it.

What happens when a handful of passionate athletes refuse to accept that ice hockey doesn't belong in the desert?

You get the Egyptian National Hockey League (ENHL) — a growing movement dedicated to bringing competitive ice hockey to Egypt, built from the ground up with sweat, vision, and a whole lot of heart.

One Team, One Vision

Right now, there’s only one official team: the Cairo Nomads. But that hasn’t stopped the momentum.

The Nomads are the foundation of the ENHL — the first full team in Egyptian history actively training, organizing, and preparing for a future league structure. While other teams are still forming, the Nomads are setting the tone: commitment, consistency, and a love for the game.

Practices aren’t just for players — they’re a statement. Every week, in a Cairo shopping mall, hockey is happening. And it’s open to everyone.

Come Watch Hockey in Egypt — Yes, Really

The Nomads currently train every Tuesday and Saturday at 8:30 PM at Sun City Mall in Cairo, and you’re invited.

Whether you're a fan, a curious onlooker, or someone who’s never seen ice hockey before, you can come witness something rare and exciting: a group of Egyptians carving up the ice, building chemistry, and pushing themselves to create a league that’s never existed here before.

Building in a Country Without Hockey

There’s no playbook for this.

Egypt doesn’t have an established hockey system, so the ENHL team has had to:

  • Source gear from abroad, often second-hand
  • Pay out of pocket for ice time and training
  • Design logos, jerseys, and branding themselves
  • Explain the rules and basics to every new fan, official, or sponsor they meet

But none of that has slowed the vision. If anything, it’s made it stronger.

The ENHL is about more than just sport. It’s about building something no one thought was possible.

How You Can Help: Gear Donations Welcome

One of the biggest challenges the ENHL faces is equipment. Most players are using old, borrowed, or heavily worn gear — and many potential new players can’t join simply because they can’t find or afford equipment.

If you or someone you know has spare or lightly-used hockey gear, please consider donating it to help support the league’s growth. Every pair of gloves, skates, pads, or sticks makes a huge difference.

The Future is on Ice

The ENHL isn’t about where we are — it’s about where we’re going.

More teams are forming. New players are joining. The ice is waiting.

And while there’s still a long road ahead before full league play begins, the foundation is here. It’s real. It’s happening.

Come watch history take shape.

Join us at Sun City Mall every Tuesday and Saturday at 8:30 PM.

Because ice hockey in Egypt isn’t a fantasy anymore — it’s a movement.
