CAIRO, EGYPT — In July 2025 the Cairo Nomads took the ice with no funding, no infrastructure and limited access to equipment. Two months later they were standing on a podium in the United Arab Emirates with a silver medal.
That compression — from an idea to an international result in a single summer — is most of the reason the Nomads are now the most recognisable name in Egyptian ice hockey.
Egypt’s founding club
The Cairo Nomads are the founding club of the Egyptian Hockey League and Egypt’s first organised ice hockey team. In a country with exactly one organised league, being first confers something that cannot be bought later: the Nomads are, for most Egyptians who encounter the sport at all, what ice hockey in Egypt looks like.
The identity helps. The club’s crest is a camel in profile inside a shield, a hockey stick in its teeth — a piece of iconography that reads instantly as Egyptian and as hockey at the same time, and which travels far better on a jersey or a sticker than a conventional badge would.
Al Ain, 2025: the run that made the name
The Nomads’ first international tournament was the Union Classic in Al Ain, UAE. The group stage went badly. The final weekend did not.

Three group-stage losses, including a shootout defeat they had every right to win, and then a semifinal in which the club finally played the game it had been training for. The 6–3 win over Majan also produced Omar Ashraf’s first goal for the Nomads. The final brought a rematch with the Cyber Bedouins and a 3–1 loss sealed by an empty-netter.
Michael Mitrakos was named Defenseman of the Tournament.
“Silver is proof we’re on the right track — now we finish the job,” head coach Jay Bergatt said after the final.

Why the Nomads travel well
Plenty of clubs win a medal without becoming a name. A few things separate this one.
The story is legible. "No funding, no infrastructure, limited equipment, silver in two months" is a sentence anyone can repeat, and it is true. It does not require the listener to follow a league table.
The club stands for a country, not a city. When the Nomads travel, they are not one Cairo club among several — they are Egypt’s entry. That makes every regional fixture a national fixture by default, which is a far larger constituency than a domestic club normally gets to address.
The merchandise does real work. The EHL shop is not a gift-shop afterthought; it is how a lot of people first make contact with the club. The Cairo Nomads snapback is a limited-edition release at $38, and 100% of profits are donated to help the Nomads keep supplying gear to new players. Buying a hat is a way of putting someone else on the ice.
A club that funds the next player
That last point is the part most easily missed. Equipment cost is the single biggest reason a curious beginner in Egypt never returns for a second session, and the Nomads know it from their own first summer.
The club and league therefore run the growth side deliberately: an equipment lending library so a new player does not have to buy a full kit to try the sport, gear donation to stock it, and beginner sessions that take complete novices of any age — 7:30 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Sun City Mall in Cairo, with league play at 8:30 PM.
There is no age cutoff. Adults who have never skated start through the adult learn-to-play pathway; children through the junior programmes.
Back to Al Ain in October
The Nomads return to the Union Classic in Al Ain from 10–17 October 2026 — the same rink, a field that now knows exactly who they are, and a result to improve on. They will play it in a new set of uniforms, the first time the club’s current sweaters are worn in competition outside Egypt.
