What is the EHL?
The Egyptian Hockey League (EHL) is the official organized ice hockey league in Egypt, founded in 2021 and headquartered in Cairo. It runs competitive seasons, player development programmes, and community outreach to grow the sport across the country.
What format do EHL games use?
EHL games are played 3-on-3 — three skaters plus a goalie per side — for the full game, with two 8-minute running-clock halves. Penalties result in penalty shots rather than power plays, and tied games go to a shootout.
Who is the founding club of the EHL?
The Cairo Nomads are the founding club of the Egyptian Hockey League and Egypt’s first organized ice hockey team. In 2025 they placed second at the Union Classic Tournament in the UAE, the league’s first international result.
Is Egypt a member of the IIHF?
The EHL is actively pursuing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) recognition and has undertaken compliance and governance work toward that goal. Officiating and coach certification tracks are aligned with IIHF expectations.
How can someone join the EHL?
Players, coaches, officials, and sponsors can apply through the join page at https://www.egyptianhockeyleague.com/join. The league offers entry pathways for every role, including learn-to-skate programmes open to complete beginners of any age and an equipment lending library that removes the cost barrier to starting. Anyone unsure where they fit can contact the league at https://www.egyptianhockeyleague.com/contact and the EHL will place them from whatever level they are at.
Do you need experience to play ice hockey in Egypt?
No. The EHL welcomes complete beginners — people who have never skated as well as skaters who have never played hockey — and coaches start each one from whatever level they are at. The adult learn-to-play pathway is at https://www.egyptianhockeyleague.com/adult-learn-to-play, junior programmes and school outreach take first-timers aged 4 to 17, and the equipment lending library means new participants do not have to buy gear to start.
Is there an age limit to start playing hockey with the EHL?
No. There is no age cutoff. The EHL accepts beginner skaters and beginner hockey players of all ages, whether that is a child stepping onto the ice for the first time or an adult starting from zero.
